Visitors Guide to Ajman

Residency, Visas and Work Permits

As within other states in the UAE it is possible to obtain a residency permit, however it is not automatic, as it will need to be applied for. Regulations are subject to change, so it is advisable to consult a lawyer regarding residency and work permits. Permits are usually only obtainable if the property is to be used for a permanent move and are renewable at the time of expiry. Restrictions may also be held regarding the place of employment, as some visas permit the holder to work only for their own company, and a residency visa does not always automatically entitle the bearer to a working permit. Regulations vary depending on the home country of the applicant, so embassies and the assistance of lawyers specialising in Ajman and the UAE are highly recommended.

At present, British Airways offer flights to Ajman from major UK airports, with a flight time of approximately 7 hours. Gulf Air and Qatar Airways also provide links to the Ajman international airport.

Local Transport

As in most of the UAE, private cars are the most popular forms of transport, with taxi’s and hire cars also heavily in use. Women are permitted to drive in Ajman, along with the rest f the UAE. Public buses are available, with a bus service to begin operating at the end of 2008 between Ajman and Dubai, with further services to follow. As Dubai is only approximately 10km from Ajman, the connecting services will be a further step in improving the touristic benefits for Ajman and buy-to-let investors. If opting to drive when visiting Ajman, it is advisable to check for updates in licensing requirements prior to departure.

Health and Safety

Ajman has a family feel to the region with a cosmopolitan outlook, families can often be found heading to the beaches late in the week for dinners and the markets provide a bustling atmosphere during the day. The city and surrounding areas are very safe and welcoming to visitors as the population has grown over recent years with migrating workforces from the surrounding states, along with large immigrant Asian workforces, and more recently an influx of westerners basing companies in the area for strategic reasons, along with taxation benefits. Although Ajman is a safe destination, personal precautions should be taken and respect should be shown towards local customs and traditions.
